About Us
Our Background
Established in 1984 in Derby, Swinburne Housing provides personalised support and accommodation to adults with complex and ongoing mental health needs, often including behaviours that some may find challenging. We are committed to helping our service users develop key life skills that will enable them to live safely in the community, further develop their independence and become more active, contributing members of society.
Based in Derbyshire, all of our accommodations are specialised; in the sense that they have been developed/renovated purposefully to meet the needs of people with ongoing mental health support needs. By offering both residential and independent living options, we are able to provide supported housing accommodation that best fits the individuals personal circumstances.
Our staff work alongside the people we support, their families, close friends and local commissioners. Ultimately all the support we provide is person centred, meaning it is specifically tailored to the individual and their own unique needs. We operate with a policy of completely fair access, diversity and inclusion. People from all backgrounds, ethnicities and genders will be considered and can expect to be treated with respect and dignity.
Area’s of Expertise
Our managers and support staff have decades of experience working in psychiatric mental health care; this includes a variety of roles in both hospitals and in the community. We consider our speciality to be working with people who have a diagnosis of schizophrenia or personality disorder, although over the years we’ve also had great success working with people who struggle with drug and alcohol issues, depression and anxiety.
Alongside our own expertise we have strong working relationships with doctors, pharmacists and psychiatrists in our local area. This enables us to act quickly and ensure our service users are seen to promptly if a situation arises that is beyond our permit as support providers.
With the understanding of mental health being a rapidly evolving area of healthcare; we’re pro-active on seeking the latest training and ensuring all staff are up to date with the latest practices.
Ethos and Ethics
Renewable Energy – sustainability is important to us, which is why all of our homes are powered by green energy suppliers. Currently we are working with Octopus Energy who power all of our homes via their solar farm based in Leicester. Switching over to 100% renewable energy was important to us because climate change is escalating rapidly and it’s our intention to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible. We’re also very active with recycling and have eliminated all single use plastics from our organisation.
Living Wage Employer – since 2011 we have been a Living Wage employer; meaning that we voluntarily pay all of our staff a higher rate of base pay that meets the true cost of living the UK. This means staff are comfortably able to pay their bills and live without unnecessary financial stress. The benefit of this extends to our service users as they in turn receive support from people who are happy at their workplace and therefore able to fully focus on doing their job to the best of their ability.
